The beauty of the [true] Gospel is that no matter what you do or how you feel, you are continually in the presence of the Father. Always united. Forever safe. Simply because He has joined Himself to humanity! What rest there is for the one who enters this understanding. Or perhaps the one who this understanding enters. It tends to take hold of you. He makes me lie down in green pastures. Your Rest will come, because He already has.
From the very beginning… God created man, naked, in a garden where everything was created and provided for him. Everything was in place before Adam even was. Then the Lord proceeds to bring every animal in front of Adam to name them. Doesn’t sound like Adam did a whole lot of work there, just naming things. And he and God would take a nice little walk in the cool of the day. It sounds like rest was the initial intention to me.
Now Israel was unable to enter His rest because of their unbelief. In Psalm 95 we are told some of the story as david proclaims, “do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, as in the day of trial in the wilderness, when your fathers tested Me; They tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, and said ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they do not know My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’” This is reiterated in a reference in Hebrews that tells us Israel could not enter His rest because of unbelief. Clearly this idea of rest is something worth taking another look at, there must be something more here than we have previously recognized.
You may be thinking, “That is why we have the sabbath, that is what sundays are.” Well, you know, good ole sabbath Sundays are simply a type or a shadow of what the Father really had in mind. The substance of which is Jesus and the fact that He dwells inside of you. Your rest is now continual. Your rest is the fact that you are completely encompassed in everything that the Father is. Your life is now an overflow of the reality that Jesus Christ has taken up residence within every fiber of who you are. Life is the overflow and manifestation of this truth. Namely, “That you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Here is what Angles proclaim of Jesus at His birth in Luke 2;
"Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace, goodwill in men!"
Formerly, man was not at rest. God has never not been at rest with us. The disconnect, disbelief, was always on mans side. The Father and His Son came to bring man to the understanding that they are at peace with God and with themselves. There has always been a fairly common at odds with each other among men, however, a result of knowing that you yourself are not at odds with the Father or even yourself, is a peace and rest that manifests into all of your relationships.
"For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one [Jew and Gentile… this passage was written to Gentiles 2:12 "at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise". What Paul is saying in modern christian jargon is they are the world. People we would deem "unsaved".], and has broken down the middle wall of separation. Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God" - Ephesians 2:14-19
In Christ there is now one new man, one human race, one body. The body of Christ.
"For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all… Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh… God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" 2 corinthians 5:14-19, kinda. You can read it all if you’d like.
But what I’m getting at is this; Christ has accomplished all there is to accomplish. Ephesians 1:10 says that “Christ has gathered all things in Himself, both which are in heaven and which are on earth-in Him.” He is the fullness and the expression. The substance and the shadow. Hebrews 1:3 “Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” He is the image of the invisible God.The expression of His likeness. Francois Du Toit puts it like this, “He is not an example for us but of us”.Mankind was, from the beginning, created in Gods image and likeness. Christ has brought the true opinion of who we are and our true nature back to be the dominating influence in us.
Paul’s message was to those who would have felt alienated, estranged and left out. Those who were excluded. And his message was peace, hope, joy. Love and acceptance. Inclusion. What rest there is for those who enter this understanding. Especially considering it is waiting for you it is all around you regardless of whether you enter it or not. “Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.” Hebrews 4:1. Here is your salvation; you and God are good, He is for you. He is in you. Now rest in this truth that everything is good, even when it does not seem or feel that way. Believe that God is good. Better than you could ever fathom, imagine or comprehend. And all that awesomeness is all about you!
